The Battle for La Fiere Bridge

No Better Place to Die, The Battle for La Fiere Bridge, by Robert M. Murphy, Casemate Publishers, Philadelphia & Newbury, 2009. This is an outstanding account of the events surrounding this engagement in which F Co., 2d Bn., 401st GIR had a prominent role. Murphy was a 19 yrs. old 505 PIR pathfinder, who was a veteran of Sicily and Italy. He was present during the initial German counter attacks across the causeway which preceded the 2/401 attack on June 9. Included is one of the few surviving accounts of the Utah Beach landing, by a member of the company, Lucias P. Young. It jives closely with my father's description. Per Gen. Ridgway, "As hot a single battle as any US troops had at any time during the war in Europe." Per Gen. Jim Gavin, "The hottest single incident I experienced in all my combat service both in Europe and later in Korea." A movie is in the works, but is on hold due to funding issues. Check it out.
